Jonathan, I would never advocate for non-standard lights. I fully agree that the rules are there, so that we can identify other vessels quickly and without mistake.

(I do wonder how large, single masted sail boats comply?) I agree that being visible to other boats is important - but no where near as important as keeping ones own lookout (Navigation Rule #1) (Can single-handed long distance boaters really comply?)) and being able to quickly identify the type and heading of nearby vessels. For this we need other vessels to display the correct lights.
