Hi David,
Too bad about da head eh.
I had a similar problem recently on the QM20 but with black smoke at
1500 RPM. I did the exhaust riser cleaning and have black smoke at
1800 RPM. If I wasn't planning to swap the engine for a nice little
Universal I would pull injectors and have them checked at the shop
before proceeding to the head gasket.
If you decide to change the head gasket, it's relatively simple on
these old brutes. Give it a go. I bet you have it off the same day
and less than 4 beer.
Take the head to a shop for assessment and don't tell them you want
it planed. Planing is not routine on a cast iron head, so wait for
the report. Let them tell you what they think needs to be done.
BTW, almost three grand for a head job seems outrageous to me.
Cheers, Russ

So...we are leaving harbor to make our way down to Mystic for the
Rendezvous. As I usually do I turn around and check the exhaust
for water and color.
Today the color as darkish grey and it looked like oil was coming out as well.
I do an immediate 180 and go back to the mooring.
Mechanic is out within the hour and confirms my suspicions. Head
gasket. To do the job right (injectors, planing head etc) he
estimates $2,500 to $3,000. I think the price is fair but I wonder
if I could do it myself. Anyone have any experiences around
this? I am a fair mechanic, but I don't want to be penny-wise of
pound foolish and I have never done anything like this before.
Thanks in advance...
