Bernie Search the forum. I posted a couple of emails in the last week concerning the repair of my centre board. The bottom couple of inches are filler. I would post the link to some pictures but I can't figure it out on this stupidpad. Bigest thing is to ensure the board is up all the way when not in use. In you are in the great white north I think the freeze/ thaw cycle will exacerbate any damage.
My board was jammed up for several years never missed it, I don't race. There are several styles of boards. Mine weighs 300 - 400 pounds. One lister quoted his at 920 pounds. On our year on cruising to the Bahamas and back we ran aground many times. Never once was I concerned with the rudder. Most times we healed the boat with a halyard to free the boat.
