I think you should try minor adjustments 1st. Then, if you need to open the trany cover and move the shaft while in neutral and inspect the oil level.
I tested mine today after I rebuilt it and installed. A couple minor adjusts in the reverse band nut and one small one to the forward. She seems to run great and my reverse is now engaging when I hold it firm. I had taken pics and saved all my notes and will share soon. Good luck.
