Net tonnage is the cargo carrying capacity of wine casks in the old days. The good old days, a couple o' hundred years ago. :) So, it means you can go cruising with 1800 gallons of wine and not much else. Nothing wrong with that eh.

Gross tonnage includes machinery, crew and galley spaces.
