Hello, I have Simrad setup. The wireless handset comes with a charging cradle. On my boat, the fixed mount radio is mounted down below at the chart table. The charging cradle for the wireless handset is at the helm. When I'm on the boat the radio is on and the handset is in the cradle, so it's charging and accessible. Of course it can be lost overboard, like many other things on boats. Things I have lost overboard include mobile phones, winch handles, sunglasses, etc.
Personally, I don't really care that the second station is wireless. When I had my SH radio I installed the RAM mic at the helm and I was very happy with it. I only care that there IS a second station / remote handset, because not all VHF radios support them. The fact that the RS35 is wireless doesn't make it more or less useful to me. When I'm sailing I usually wear an inflatable PFD with a portable radio on my belt (I have the SH HX851 with GPS/DSC). Regarding an earlier question about how the Simrad radio works: Overall I'm happy with it. The audio quality is very good - it's easy to understand people speaking, and it gets pretty loud. My transmit and receive distances are very good (I think the antenna matters more for this than the radio). I like the features - the AIS works very well and I can tap a target on my plotter and see all of the important information like TCPA, distance, etc. The DSC functions also works well. My handheld supports DSC so I can make and receive DSC calls from the dink to big boat and the entire world doesn't need to know about it. The only reason I'm not super happy with the radio is that there are some bugs. At random times the radio will reset. Also, at random times it will switch to a weather station. Simrad released updated firmware back in October and I just took my radio off othe boat so I can send it in to be updated. I hope the update corrects the problems but I won't know until the spring. Hope this helps Barry From: Frederick G Street <f...@postaudio.net> To: cnc-list@cnc-list.com Subject: Re: Stus-List VHF / AIS Message-ID: <88553ce9-5302-47a3-8cf7-c1a74be3c...@postaudio.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" That?s supposed to be a pretty nice radio; but I have an issue with the whole wireless remote mic thing. First, has anyone ever lost overboard something that wasn?t firmly attached to the boat? And secondly, has anyone gone to use a piece of rechargeable battery-powered electronics, only to find that the battery was dead? Neither of these scenarios apply to a hard-wired remote mic like the S-H or the Icom. Otherwise, I?d agree that the Simard was a great option.
