If you REALLY want it to stick, raise the boat a few inches off the keel and
fill the gap with 5200. From what I have read, the 5200 will hold the keel on
by itself once it sets.

Dave

Had a Hinterhoeller Niagara 26 that had this problem (built by George
Hinterhoeller who was likely the production head at C&C when yours was built).
Also had a J Boats J27 with same problem.

Torque the keel bolts. Simple to do with the only issue being finding the
correct sized deep sockets (there were three sizes on the Niagara). Then do as
Bob and others suggest and grind out along the crack and fair.

I did the fairing several times on each boat. The smile was not an issue on
either but the annual crack in the faired area along the smile bugged me. I
tried fairing with several products over the years including 3M Premium Marine
filler, West epoxy with 407 filler, West G-Flex with 407 etc… Always the crack
in the fairing returned after one or two seasons. Finally at the advice of
others on this and other lists I ground out a little more and wrapped with 3
layers 6 oz cloth and west epoxy and then faired. Never saw the smile again …
The part of the repair that was time consuming was only waiting for the epoxy
to cure so that it could be sanded. Simple but effective repair

And of course as stated here numerous times already … the smile is not a
problem at all if the bolts are torqued

Thanks for your reply Dave. Love the blog. Yes water ingress is certainly a
concern, but I have not noticed any rust bleeding out. I'm wondering if I
should wait until spring when I paint to torque the bolts. Or do you think
there's a risk of water ingress over the winter? I'm in NY, so she will
freeze. Any thoughts on the timing of when I tighten them?

All I did on my boat was get a big socket wrench and tighten the bolts.
Others will chip in soon with more involved repairs.

Hi all,
I'm brand new to the list here and I'm not quite sure how this list works
yet... But I'm excited to join because I'm the proud new owner of a 1976 C&C 30
mki.
My boat is hauled for the winter and is exhibiting the much-talked-about C&C
"smile" at the front of the keel, but there is also a hairline separation from
the hull at the very aft section of the keel that extends for about 6" from the
aft of the keel forward. This separation is such that if I kneel down and peer
at it at just the right angle, I am able to see light on the other side. I am
concerned.

I have a survey from 2014. And there is no mention of the keel. It only
states, "...The vessel was observed on stands. A bottom examination was
conducted. No structural deformities were noted. Running gear is in
acceptable condition..." etc. etc.
Some photos of my keel are available at the links below. If anyone has some
insight/experience into what I'm seeing I'd love to hear it. Thanks so much
and excited to be a part of the forum.
