Oil dripping down the side indicates that you are doing it right! Seriously though, there is no way to prevent it. I take a lightly used absorbent pad from under the engine and place it under the filter. If I'm quick i can usually minimize the mess.
An aftermarket oil filter relocator kit would allow for a less messy time but finding room might be difficult. JEGS, JC Whitney, and Amsoil all have kits.
