What strikes me is that you stated that the alarm "stayed" on after you started the engine following your half hour of sailing. My experience with cooling problems (either with the fresh water or the internal recirculating cooling) is that is usually takes a few to several minutes for the engine to overheat and the temp alarm to sound if one of these systems is not working properly.
If the problem was with something mechanical, i would have expected that you could have motored for a few minutes before the engine overheated. Perhaps check the T sensor grounding and connections?
