The 'cove strip' on our boat is a blue tape.....was there when we bought
the boat 10 years ago......not sure when it was actually
applied.....looks as good now as it did in 2006. Not certain but I
think the PO got it from an automotive store.
Point being, tape will work just fine if it is a quality product.
