I guess I was looking at an older IFC book; I found another dated 1917 (“International Code of Signals, American Edition”), in which “AMF” means a compass bearing of 88° West.
Of course, in this one, “MGF” means “an equal number of” and “MIT” means “every”; so there must be a newer code now, where the “M”s are for “Medical”.
