It is almost impossible to leave negative feedback about any eBay purchase no
matter how egregious the transaction. You simply won’t be allowed do it. Many
frustrated buyers simply “plea-bargain” for Neutral so they can “move on”.

I bought a How-To manual for a computer game once and only the package that it
was packed in arrived. The manila envelope had been reused from a previous
purchase and resealed with what appeared to be pancake syrup (or KY). The
seller begged me, “in the name of Our Lord Jesus”, not to give him/her neutral
feedback. BAH!

Having said all that, I actually bought my C&C 27 on eBay and love it. Now, if
I can only stop the rain from leaking under the toe rails. The Westerbeke had
to have a crack welded too. Oh, and the balsa has to be replaced where the roof
was cracked; cosmetic stuff, really.

The great thing about the Internet is that scammers like this can run but they
can't hide. You can find a lot about someone if you know how to look and they
don't cover their tracks perfectly.

In this case the weak point is his phone number, which is basically a unique
search key.

Tracing that it appears that he's a sailboat flipper of sorts. I found a
previous ad with *identical* text in places (the ALL CAPS stuff about please be
an informed bidder, 24 hours deposit required, etc).

He listed this Morgan Out Island 36 earlier this year, in Florida:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/INCREDIBLY-SPACIOUS-GLOBAL-CRUISER-by-famous-yacht-maker-No-Reserve-Aft-Cabin-/201335429823

Someone on cruisersforum noticed it, but there was no commentary on it (last
post here):
http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f47/ebay-sailboat-scam-143861-2.html

Also a Cal 34 in Virginia which sold for $6.3k:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/LAPWORTH-JENSEN-WORLD-CRUISER-For-Pennies-on-The-Dollar-NO-RESERVE-Xlnt-4-Couple-/201314971076

He has a neutral ebay review from a year+ ago which said:
"caveat emptor. Boat was not "ready to put in the water and sail""
for a listing of "SERIOUS BLUE WATER OCEAN CRUISER No Res - New York City
(#200361465706)" which sold for $1425.

Oh and he flips motor boats too:
http://www.boats4sale.pro/detail/us/OHnFCCdmndHnCeFCPHd/Rare-Opportunity-to-Own-a-20K-to-30K-SPORTS-CRUISER-w

The Morgan OI listing has surprisingly extensive dialogue from him. So at least
he's a good writer and seller of the cruising dream.

Lots of gems in here which make me laugh:

"Every boat is a project boat. However, some boats are more project than boat. "

"Buying a boat like this Out Island is for someone who wants to get to know
their vessel like a cowboy knows his horse and saddle and six gun or like a
surgeon knows the tools and machines in the surgery room."

"We adopt stray boats. We already have our own cruising sailboat and we don't
need another for ourselves, but from experience and in our early cruising days
before we were spending half our year directly in boat yards and marinas and
exotic ports, we know how hard it is to find truly worth blue-water cruisers
that can be purchased on a normal middle-class income. We are relatively young
folks ourselves, and part of our passion is helping other young couples and
families and middle class retired folks afford the cruising life-style. "

"To purchase a boat where every single thing is already as it should be, would
be a dis-service to the active sailor because it prevents you from getting to
know how everything on your boat is set up and how it works."

I don't know if the Morgan OI sale was a scam, in the way that the LF38 listing
is clearly a scam (since the salvage is not disclosed). It appears he actually
knows his stuff, or at least enough to quote much of Nigel Calder and
cruisersforum. But there's certainly a lot of spin and marketing in there!
