My understanding is that Spot Sat phone is based on Globalstar network and as I recall they had some issues with their first generation satellites. I haven't checked to see if they have fully deployed the gen2 sats...
I really like my Iridium 9505 brick phone. Very simple and reliable. I've made calls from inside the cabin in heavy seas without an issue. You can pick one up on eBay for around $350.
