Hi Mike, 1. Anne & I aren't that far from retirement and we expect to do some long cruises once we have retired. We thought it time to drop the keel to have a good look at the keel bolts to check their integrity. Salazar has a big, heavy keel at 6,990 lbs. (3,170 kg.) While there wasn't any indications of an issue, this is one of those things that can nag at you when you are out in a blow, heeled over and occasionally falling off waves.
2. The sailing season here in Cape Breton, while beautiful is a bit short. The season for working outdoors, especially with epoxies is even shorter. 3. I work for a Parks & Grounds department and am at my flat out busiest during the spring prep season and the early sailing season. The boat often goes in late without all the projects done. 4. I am also involved with Race the Cape as a Co-Chair so that means I'm even busier in the spring. 4. Peter Patterson has been back in the area for a few years doing his usual high quality work. He has set up shop in Baddeck as "Bras d'Or Boatworks" with a new Brownell Hydraulic Trailer. This is one state-of-the-art machine. Air Ride, freshwater washdown, stainless steel brake fittings, an extra set of stabilizers, 48k axles and all the trimmings, good for both full immersion in salt water and also long haul highway work. Peter's Bras d'Or Boatworks facility in Baddeck has a couple of shops, one a 5000 sq. ft. lowrise building to accommodate carpentry, office and shore room needs. The other is a new 3000 sq. ft. steel, highbay, heated boatshed for larger jobs. The new location is just off the highway on Shore Road near exit 8. 5. These developments allows our keel project to be done indoors, in a controlled environment, by someone who knows what he is doing. This will also allow us a good look at the rudder shaft. Several other smaller jobs will also be completed that never seem to get done during the good weather. And all of this will be finished in time for a spring launch.
