For those of you who may not recall the IOR years, especially around 1979, beg,
borrow, buy or steal a copy of “The Legend of IMP” by Bill Barton.

The book covers the heyday of IOR racing and includes first-hand accounts of
some of the biggest races of the era. The book also covers the “Ton” racing
concept very well.

Not a lot of C&C design boat specifically mentioned but many are listed in the
SORC result tables from the 70-‘s and 80’s. I recognized several boats that
now belong to cnc-list contributors. In 1971 SORC results the 43 “Arieto” (now
Calypso) is listed. In later years several other C&Cs show up including the
39’s and 35’s.

Also, Sailing Anarchy has a topic going named “ “dance” of the IOR’s”. Reading
through the comments is like a trip back to the late 70’s and early 80’s.

Subject: Stus-List Some background on possibly the first c&c 34 3/4 ton

A good friend of mine, Mike Virr when in the UK imported one of the first C&C
34s. He modified it to rate 3/4 ton. His brief explanation is attached.

Yes, after a few mods we got measured at 3/4 ton under IOR. Rob Ball , the C&C
designer was quite surprised I got it under the 3/4 ton limit and asked I sent
him the rating certificate, which I still have somewhere but not here in
Auckland, NZ. Rob sailed with us on the Wednesday of Cowes Week in '79 as he
came over with some of the Canadian Admirals Cup boats. My hull was one of the
first C&C 34 hulls which being bigger than a 33 was more difficult to get it
under the 3/4 ton limit. We did quite a lot with the rig and ballast to get it
rated.
She was third in the British level rating series off Cowes which included new
boats from France, Germany and Sweden (a wooden Petersen with the designer on
board). Rodney Patterson won it driving Robin Asher's new She. We were second
in the very heavy weather first race.

Can you shed any light on this discussion. Didn't you have C&C customize your
boat to rate as a 3/4 ton?

This is all I could find. Notes from the spec sheet.

The 'semi custom' C&C 3/4 TON was the first design by Rob Ball for C&C yachts.
The hull and sailplan are the same as that of the slightly later production
version of the C&C 33-1.

I own a 1974 C&C 33 ¾ ton

I have looked around a bit and cannot find any reference to the term “3/4 ton”
(in C&C terms). I did find the spec sheet available on
sailboatdata.com<http://sailboatdata.com> for the ¾ ton but no explanation
there. If anyone on the list can point me in the right direction I would
appreciate it. Also, using the spec sheet on
sailboatata.com<http://sailboatata.com> is there a way to figure out the height
off the water (or min clearance) from those measurements? Thanks in advance

Burt
