Jon, This might sound to easy, but could you have wrapped something around the prop shaft? I had a similar sounding experience when a piece of heavy line wrapped around the shaft. Had to clear it with a dive knife (took about 2 hours, working with a flashlight) then restarted the engine and all was fine.
