If the tranny's that old and hasn't leaked before, then it's certainly
not the vent hole. I also keep a stash of those seals on board, because
they're a soft metal and will deform. I've had a couple of them
disintegrate.
I'm not sure about rebuilding after 1500 hours. Hurths are also used on
trawlers and boats that motor constantly, and 1500 hours will come
around pretty fast for them. Over that many hours the gears will be
worn in to match the torque curve of the engine, and a rebuild might
mess with that. Unless there's a darn good reason, I'd only mess with
what's broken.
