Tom, Laser-tachs can be purchased cheap ~$20 on amazon. I got a laser pyrometer as well and keep them both on the boat. They are invaluable. A hose end water flow meter was also purchased but has yet to be used.
With the laser-tach I was troubleshooting speed/rpm/smoke/prop pitch problems and needed to ensure I had accurate rpm readings. I also wanted to verify/adjust the minimum throttle setting of 800 rpm. I also confirmed the transmission ratio.
