Take the old cable out, measure it, buy a new one and install it. If you can easily measure the length of the existing cable, buy the new one first so you can do the r&r in one session. You have to remove the compass to get at the binnacle end. Assuming you have a Ritchie compass, start with the two screws holding the black plastic light cover, lift off the stainless housing, and then undo the screws holding the compass to the pedestal. The shift lever is then accessible.
