Simply put, if you use a thru-hull that is open to the air, i.e. drain or scupper, for a high volume pump such as a wash down pump, the pump might suck air. Using a thru-hull that is not open to the air is better.
If you use a sink drain, you can always put a stopper in it. Dennis C.
