As part of hauling the boat out this spring I plan to: 1) pull the shaft 2) redo the stuffing box (it needs it). 3) redo the cutlass bearing (doesn’t really need it, but since I’m pulling the shaft ....) 4) possibly replace the original prop (2-blade 11x7)
I’m thinking about an Indigo 3-blade 10x7.7 (my engine is an Atomic 4). Or, on the other end of the scale, a Flexofold. I’ve been quoted $1030 (including shipping) for a 2-blade 12x7 Flexofold. I do like the idea of the ability of the Indigo to get the cruising and WOT RPM’s up (in the 2400 rpm range) with the Atomic 4 ... I suspect the Flexofold would keep me limited to 2000 rpm max. I’m not currently racing the boat so the folding feature isn’t that critical to me .... probably the biggest desired improvement is to reduce prop walk .... and of course the $350 price of the Indigo is more palatable as well! I’ve got a PSS dripless shaft seal on order (7/8 x 1-5/8) I’ve got a Moyer Marine split shaft coupling on order I’ll get the shaft checked out when it is pulled and have a ‘fit & face done for the coupling. I’ve got a buddy who can machine a plate to help me pull the old shaft coupling I’ll put together a press tool to pull-in the new cutlass bearing I’ll lap-fit the prop (new or old) when it goes back together. For removing the cutlass bearing I have a picture from the haul-out during the pre-purchase survey that seems to show cutlass bearing set-screws on the shaft strut. From reading online it appears not all the 27’s came with them, but I believe the later ones did. I’ll probably get the boys that did the rebuild on the Atomic 4 last summer to come and re-align everything once It’s back together. Lot’s of good inspiration on the Compass Marine site: http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/boat_projects One question I have is I don’t know what the outside diameter of the cutlass bearing is likely to be. Seems 7/8th Duramax cutlass bearings are available in 1-1/4, 1-3/8 or 1-1/2 sizes. Any idea what size I’m looking at for a 1979 C&C 27 Mark III? Anything else major that I’m forgetting? Thoughts on the prop replacement? Thanks, Peter Fell Sidney, BC C&C 27 MkIII
