It would likely only work at low speeds with the boat level and you will be
seeing what you already passed. We used to stick them on PVC pipes for testing
the equipment and I know one person who has mounted it on an angle on a pipe
that he rotates to look for underwater objects.
You also could get a 200 KHz fishfinder and use the transducer you already have.

I would invest in a good retrieval line for the crown of the anchor and spend
the money you saved on beer.

Given that the bronze through-hull Structure Scan transducer is $1200+, I'm not
surprised that you would try the skimmer. Just remember that you're going to
have to be sailing flat (or motoring) in order for it to work with any degree
of reliability, or even be underwater at all, given heeling; and there may be
enough turbulence off the transom that it won't read well, unless you're just
barely making way.

Also, at the transom, you'll bee seeing what the bow already passed, rather
than what's below it.

Hi folks,

While my boat will be on the hard for a few weeks I'm thinking about adding an
inexpensive (but HD) skimmer (Retractable / removable) transom mount sonar
transducer.
The idea behind the skimmer is that 1) it's 1/3 the price, 2) No through hull
required 3) We can fabricate a bracket that would make it retractable /
removable when I'm not using it

Why Sonar? Because our lake is notorious for eating anchors, my chartplotter
has it all built-in, and adding this transducer is simple plug and play:
http://www.starmarinedepot.com/simrad-structurescan-hd-skimmer-transducer.html?gclid=CIjOj4T1wbwCFaZAMgodhX8AFg

At 238.00 this transducer is cheaper than replacing my pricey Delta anchor once.

I almost lost the anchor last year, I had to use the Spinnaker winch to pull it
up and half a tree emerged along with the anchor, good thing the tree was
rotted enough to break. From what I'm told I got lucky.

Is there any reason I would not want to rig this on my stern somehow?

Thanks in advance,
