I'm looking for 1 or 2 sailors to help with the return trip. The plan is to leave June 15 or 16 and sail to Annapolis via Norfolk (to clear Customs). When I bought Imzadi she was documented, and I elected to change the ownership and continue the documentation (more on that in a moment). The form to fill out to change the ownership took maybe 10 minutes to do, and the fee was less than one year of state registration. I had the additional activity of registering a lien on the boat because she was financed. That paperwork took about an hour, and there was a fee for recording ? something like $15 per page. I guess the total cost ran around $75. Renewal every year since has been $0. I don?t recall having to pay anything when the mortgage (not the proper term, but equivalent to what the USCG calls it) was cleared. There is, BTW, talk about instituting an annual fee for renewing the documentation. Now, as to why I think documentation is better than state registration: If you visit a foreign country, your boat is actually supposed to be documented as a US vessel. I don?t think most places are strict about enforcing that rule. In most states, you don?t need to register a documented vessel. So you avoid the cost of registration (but not whatever sales, use, or personal property taxes there are) and you don?t need to have the ugly numbers stuck to your bow. Some states do, however, require registration, but you only need to have the colored state sticker on the starboard side of the mast. YMMV. Your documentation is your title, so you avoid state title fees, and if you move or take the boat to a different state (baring Florida) you are exempt from retitling/reregistering. Some of us have reported that the HIN on the transom and the hull number stamped into a plate in the cockpit don?t match. My 25 had an extra zero on the plate (25225 on the hull vs. 250225 on the plate) and it took me literally weeks before I could get that sorted out and a title issued when I moved to North Carolina. And a personal reason: My dog sails with me, and the tags on his harness and collar say ?Chance S/V Imzadi US Doc 664669 and my cell phone number?. Anyone with any sense at all can figure out how to get in touch with me if he wanders off while we are traveling. It was on a J42? and was inserted into their second bow roller with a pin securing it and appeared easily romovable. I was unsure how it secured aft of the pin, but as it was essentially a lever, that portion would be pushing down on the deck and so could have been lightly secured with a temporary measure. I have not seen one before, so was unsure if it was custom, but took notice for it's simplicity and flexibility. You might want to look into it. I few years ago I installed an X-5 wheel autopilot on my 29-1. The old specs for the X-5 put a 38LF right near the upper limits. I am planning on moving the X-5 over to the 38LF before selling the 29-1. Does anyone have any experience with how the X-5 performs on a 38 Landfall under sail? I am sure it would perform fine under engine power, and I have learned with a tender vessel like a 29-1, that good sail balance is key to a happy autopilot performance, so I would think that giving the stiffer sailing characteristics of the 38LF that the X-5 may perform fairly ok. So when I went to try to re-document the boat in my name with a new boat name......the Documentation office told me that it had a mortgage still on it and I would have to get that discharged first....I actually had a "copy" of the mortgage discharge papers from a bank that no longer existed or was bought up by one of the larger banks in the Boston area...... So a 14 year stalemate ensued.....with several exchanges of information but they wanted "original documents of the discharge" and "original bills of sale"..... I got the name of a "documentation expert" in our area from a friend and after almost 2 years, she has now completed the documentation of my boat with new owner and new name an hailing port and I have the new Documentation paperwork from the USCG. She was able to reconstruct the original sale by the previous owners and actually found the bank that had absorbed the previous lien and was able to produce a signed notice of satisfaction that the USCG approved.... As it turned out, she was the original documentation service that did the paperwork for the twice previous owner in the first place in 1983. So the moral; of the story is that if it's simple, do it yourself.....if a mortgage from a previous owner is involved.....get help. The bill for doing mine was $475.....plus the USCG charge????
