Well of course, but even here on Lake Erie there are lots of places where cell 
phones don't work properly. 
We are either under a cliff, or just plain out of range, or they insist on 
talking to the wrong (U.S. or Canadian) tower for the phone we are using.

Cell phones need towers. They can't talk to each other directly.

I see everyone using these things on bigger powerboats, but couldn’t you just 
use your cell phones with one of those cheap earplugs with mic? Or a gaming 
headset?
