My girlfriend and I mocked one up out of a broomstick, a clamp, a desk and a chair IIRC. I'm sure a lot of combos will work but it's important to have both hands free and to be able to rotate the wheel in a controlled manner, and slowly. Gloves or one of those sewing palms are a must. I think she managed it in a few sittings. She's an artist and enjoys doing meticulous, detailed work so she actually enjoyed the project and it came out really nice.
