Guys,

I raced 2 Chicago Macs and 1 Port Huron Mac in the 80's and no one wore PFD's
despite up to 40 knot winds on the nose and no roller furling so many sail
changes in the dark. Also no safety harness or clipping in. Also, sailed the
Caribbean in the same years and no safety gear was worn, ever. I am not saying
this was good, it just was. Of course now in my 60th year and for the last 15
I have been using all of the safety gear, but only when the seas are getting up
or it is dark. It is pretty hard to fall out of a well found well sailed boat
if you observe basic body positioning and keep one hand on the vessel at all
times. But then I played a lot of football and maybe got wacked too many times.

My wife and I saw it last night. And yes, like many of you I squirmed at the
timing of repairs, the methods, the strange priority of responding to problems
and so on. I was muttering the entire movie.

But my wife had a little different take on things. Since it seemed to be pretty
clear from the opening of the movie that he was a bit of wreck in real life it
might stand to reason that what you saw in his responses to problems may have
been how he approached many of his problems in life and maybe why he was out
there alone.

I thought this line of reasoning had some merit. And yeah, it?s Hollywood so...

My wife did reconsider the whole boat thing though. :-)

Cheers,
Dave

I saw the movie and enjoyed it. It was about the human condition - very
existential. Ending was amibiguous at best though the final scene borrows
from Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel. That being said one would of course have
to think it was the 80's - before the advent of handheld GPS, DSC and
waterproof handheld VHF. I teach Celestial Navigation and the prospect of
taking out the book and doing sun sites is slim. If he was doing noon sites he
would get at best latitude and if otherwise an LOP and estimated position - not
a fix as shown. Of course, no life jacket is inexcusable but was probably done
purely for aesthetic purposes. All in all it was a pretty good movie. Don't
forget a couple of handheld gps and extra batteries for your ditch bag. The
boat was a 1970's Cal 39 (they used three, one for ocean sailing scenes, on on
set for below and one for special effects, i.e sinking. Jerry. C&C 27-V.

Congrats on the new boat!

I purchased an '88 30 MKII two summers ago after owner a 30 MKI for just over a
decade. It has to be one of the "biggest" 30 footers out there.

I would change everything, even the fuel if possible.

Can't comment on the Volvo heater.

My Yanmar needs a bit of throttle if its cool outside. If it's really cold I
need to give it up to 3/4 throttle and it takes a few cranks. I think this
could be normal on an engine without glow plugs. When it is warm out, or the
engine is warm it starts right up. I get a little smoke at start up but then
it runs fine. I think there is more smoke with a colder engine.
Since you purchased your boat in the fall, if it was me I would wait until I
saw how the engine started and ran in warm weather before I made a decision on
the injectors. Disclaimer: this is my first diesel so take that for what it's
worth (for months I thought that toggle switch on the engine control panel was
a glow plug switch and faithfully held it down for
30 seconds before starting... it took months before I figures it out).

Reef early and it's a fun boat. So reef early. :)

Going out in conditions that I would not think twice about a full main, a 135%,
single handed, with a glass of merlot and a plate of cheese in the cockpit in
my old MKI found me rounding up out of control gulping my wine before it
spilled on the MKII. However, the cabin design and light air performance more
than make up for having to think a little more before going out in a breeze.

Sail on...

Rob

That's a happy face. ?Does that mean she's never sailing again, or she is going

Yeah, a bit confusing. Actually, she loves the boat. So long as it never leaves
the Chesapeake Bay. She?s done a few Bay to Newport RI and back deliveries on
larger boats plus a Delmarva circumnavigation on our boat.

These days when I mention that I?m planning on taking the boat to the Bahamas
her response is ?have a nice time, call when you arrive and let me know where
the nearest airport is.?

That's actually a nice trip. Jump off from Charleston and avoid the nightmare
of the ICW. Pick the right window. Fwiw, I love the Bahamas - friendly people
and the cleanest water anywhere remotely close to North America. Great trip,
and that in a 7'+ draft boat.
