Yes, we need to get younger people into sailing and cruising and racing. How can that be done?
I noticed at my boatyard or at the dock, I'm probably the youngest boatowner working on any sailboat and I'll be 60 next summer. There is one 30 year old who bought a desperation sale Hunter last Spring. Most of my sailing friends are my age or older. Most of the powerboaters here are our age too. I still keep up on maintenance. Just spent $450 on three new Harken blocks to replace worn out mainsheet system. Waited too long and the sheaves are dumping bearings. Took advantage of a 15% off sale, but it cost that much for a Harken fiddle block w jamcleat and two single blocks rated for my boat. Believe me, I shopped around and this was the best deal. Maybe the younger generation is smarter than us? The costs just to own my boat, slip fees, insurance, winter storage, bottom paint, hardware, sails, etc, have increased so much in 10 years of ownership, it's really hard to justify. No wonder boats are selling cheap. I remember crying when bottom paint was $100/gal. Now it's twice that. Any parts w metal are 3 to 5 times the cost they used to be. Guess I'll be working till I fall overboard? Chuck Resolute 1990 C&C 34R Atlantic City, NJ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ronald B. I was depressed about that! Now I'm really down. He was ready to give it to charity. We got to find a way to get younger folks into the sport just so we can sell our boats when they ship us off to the home. New Cushions throughout would be $2500 - $3500 on there own. The vinyl (vinal) teak and holly sole kinda scares me. I saw this at the boat show. reminded me of the peel and stick cheapo rental property tiles that are typically used to hide something. I guess good old boat just did a favorable article on this stuff though. so, my opinion is just that, completely subjective. New diesel fuel, or a new diesel engine? I'm curious...
