On the older PSS shaft seal versions without the vent tube; burbing may also be
needed after sailing in boisterous conditions where the boat may "surf" or
experience turbulent water near the prop shaft. Also, if a diver using SCUBA
has been under the boat, some of the vented air bubbles may get trapped in the
bellows.

If you are motoring along (several hours or more) and begin to hear a squeaking
sound from the shaft seal area, air may have been trapped prevent water from
cooling and lubricating the shaft seal to prop shaft rotor interface. Happened
on Calypso sailing/motoring between Barkley Sound and Roche Harbor (18 to 20
hours underway, fog with wind for 15 hours). It was 0dark30, rough seas owing
to the tide rip off Victoria BC, not enough wind to make decent progress
against the current so we are motor sailing. I could faintly hear a squeak
over the on deck noises and the engine. One of the Calypso crew dropped down
under the cockpit to investigate and confirmed the noise was coming from the
shaft seal. (It was also warm to the touch.) A quick burp and all was well.

On the flip side (traditional stuffing box), I had a Ericson 30+ in a timeshare
lease program back in the early 80's with a traditional stuffing box. While a
customer was motoring along the packing nut became loose. (I never determined
why and the maintenance service claimed it had been checked and the lock nut
was tight. My guess was the packing nut was over tightened and became loose
when the customer backed out of a slip.)

The boat was on its way to the bottom by the time the customer figured out he
could screw the packing nut back on and stem the flow enough for the pumps to
keep up. Hauled the boat immediately and put on a PSS Shaft Seal.

Ditto Joe's experience. Mine is the older version which has to be "burped"
after launched to release the air trapped in the shaft log.
The more recent versions have a vent that must be led above the waterline.

Alex,

I put in a dripless system 12 years ago. No a single issue with it. I would
do it again in a heartbeat. No muss, no fuss, and a dry bilge.
