Hi, Mike -- welcome to the absolute best place for "vintage" C&C info! :^)
I've got a '79 LF38, hull #009, and currently have a Simrad WP30 wheelpilot on the boat (as does at least one other LF38 owner on this list -- Wal, chime in). Unfortunately, Simrad's out of the wheelpilot biz, so that unit is no longer available. The SPX-5 (as well as the new EVO-100 wheel -- it looks like it uses the same drive) are rated just above the design displacement of the LF38; probably okay for most use, but under heavy weather use, maybe a bit iffy. As I've been in the marine electronics field on and off for a while, both on the design and install side, I've looked hard at installing a below-deck unit on my boat; but as you've probably noticed, access around the rudder post, quadrant and the rest of the steering system on the LF38 is EXTREMELY tight. If I were to do it, I'd put an Octopus 1212LAM12 hydraulic linear drive to the starboard side of the quadrant, connected directly to the quadrant (not recommended, but no other option in this case), and use either Ray's SPX30 (now out of production) or the newer EVO-200 course computer to drive it. That would give you a max rated displacement of 33,000 lbs, a pretty decent safety factor (!) over the 16,000 lb displacement of the LF38; and the Octopus hydraulic drives are much longer-lasting and more reliable than the Raymarine linear electric drives.
