I have a few thoughts on this. I put in an NX2 speed/depth/wind system on my Catalina about 10 years ago. I liked the system a lot and had very few issues with it, other than forgetting to tighten the lock on the wind transducer and losing it off the mast in the middle of a race, but I guess I can't blame Nexus for that. That unit was all NMEA 0183 at the time, with a central server that connected all of the transducers and the displays daisy chained from that. I had it interfaced to my Garmin GPS for true wind and COG.
When I went shopping for a new system for my new to me 30-2 last winter, it struck me how little the NX2 displays had changed in 10 years, they look identical to my old boat. Shopping the Chicago Strictly Sail show last winter, I thought that the new offerings from Raymarine and B&G/Simrad were far brighter and more versatile. I also like the Garmin units and have a friend that liked his. However, I am concerned about where Garmin is headed as they integrate Nexus. The booth in Chicago had the Nexus NX2 gear front and center, with only 1 Garmin branded display at the back of the booth that was not even hooked up. I would be cautious about the Garmin branded systems for that reason. I wound up buying a B&G system with new transducers, three Triton displays (2 on the mast, one at the helm) and a Zeus Touch 7 MFD on the cockpit bulkhead. The wiring is all NMEA2000, with an ethernet output for the WiFi repeater connected to the Zeus. I have been extremely impressed with the system this summer and would recommend it to anyone. My crew and guests were enthusiastic as well. The hardware is identical and the price is in the same ballpark as the Simrad system that Fred talked about in his message. However, the B&G units, especially the Zeus, have slightly different firmware that brings in some sailing specific features, including a page that has 10 datapoints surrounding a graphical display with wind angles and layline plots. For that reason, I would recommend them over the equivalent Simrad units. Just my two cents.
