My 35 MKII works best when close hauled if the first third of the mainsail
is luffing, so I mostly always have the first third of the main from the
mast back luffing, that is faster and less heel on Alianna, for good upwind
speed heel angle 15 to 25 degrees is good...the main works best upwind with
the top 2 tell tales streamimg straight back; I drop the traveller below
center line in apparent winds above 17 and I fallten the main by increasing
outhaul tension when I drop the traveller. I only have 2 tell tales on my
mais sail for good reason...it's a 2 plus 2 batten main with loose foot and
high roach...mine is high aspect ratio with an open foot on the shorter
boom at about 12 feet...it's a good sail but rig tension needs to be right
for best performance. I have end boom sheeting with a bridge deck
traveller and traveller and mainsheet adjsutment in reach from the helm
station for single handed sailing...I have a Raymarine wind system, a
cockpit mounted inclinometer and marked halyards which allow me to sail by
the numbers...after some time with the numbers I can now do it mostly by
feel, at least in our Bay
