I suspect it a coincidence of cosmic proportions. Wikipedia says the first HHG2 novel was written in 78, and I'm sure I was in grad school in the 80s when the cosmological constant was calculated. I recall some of my friends and I (probably the those least likely to make good, traditional engineers) being quite amused by the symmetry of it all.
Now if Jerry Pournell or Larry Niven had written the books, I'd not be quite so sure. To keep this C&C related, perhaps it is also a sign that we should all be sailing 42s.
