"Stinky Dog" (1984 C&C 41) had the same problem with lights burning out, colored caps falling off etc.
My solution follows:
A strip of black starboard was cut from a larger board and the edges were rounded with a router.
Holes were drilled in the strip to line up with the holes in the panel.
The starboard strips were mounted on the panel over the existing holes where the original indicater lights were. The new LED's were pressed through the holes in the new strip. "Blue Sea" LED's were used as they were available
in the local marine supply store .
Different colored lights were used to draw attention to systems energized.
The jury is still out as to how the different colors are working.
