You will like the LED upgrade.  I did mine 5 years ago.  My only suggestion is 
to install a switch to shut them off.  They are very bright when night sailing.

I thought the panel lights were just standard 1/8" red LEDs in panel holders.  
All available from Radio Shack.  Now you got me wondering... I'll have to look 
closer next time I'm down at the boat.
