I did both - but mostly at different times. Started with a '58 Porsche Speedster (actually my second Porsche, the first was a '64 SC, but too nice to fool around with). High speed time trials in the Speedster.
At the same time, I was crewing on two boats - then partnered into a Santana 27. Gave the boat up for a bigger house - two hobbies and a new house are too much. A '67 BMW to drive. Then a '64 C coupe - quick rebuild and sale. A '68 modified 911S which became the track car - built into an IMSA 2.5 GTU - ran west coast and Sebring (once). Picked up a '69 911S and sold it, then divorced - she got the Speedster and the Bavaria, I got the IMSA car. Then an '83 911T/S, then a '78SC coupe, then a new lady with a '71T Targa. Then a new chassis ('70 S) for a new IMSA car, which had glass bodywork, and later it got LeMans 935 long tail and a bunch of tubes/altered suspension, etc. Just chartered with friends for my water fix. New lady got a '79 Targa. Sold them all and moved to Maryland and got Penniless (30-1). Changed ladies. Now a 330ci and half the boat. And you may wonder where the money went.... I'll bet there may be a connection there as well. For me, the head-to-head racing on a track has an appeal, but I am more comfortable on an autocross course.
