Bar Keepers Friend is great stuff. It is found at Acme and ShopRite and WalMart but in a funny place. There is a powder like Ajax and a cream version.

It doesn’t take a lot of heat to soften the finish and very little pressure with the putty knife . I removed the old finish on my sole in about 3.5 hours with no gouges or scratches on the sole. It is a lot safer than sanding! Once the finish is removed oxalic acid will lighten the sole. Barkeeper’s Friend, which is available at most hardware stores will lighten modest staining and is easy to use. Avoid the aggressive two part teak cleaners as the laminate is thin and the cleaners are very aggressive. Good Luck. Do the best with what you have. Sanding too far will go through the holly veneer and divits can't be sanded out. But they add character. I'm sure it will be a wonderful improvement however you do it. My wife has volunteered to try to take on the project and was more than excited when I bought her her very own orbital sander. (Sorry guys, she's taken.) So, we took up a small section and she sanded away the poly coating and have dried things out. And, although MUCH better than it looked originally, we're still seeing some discoloration in both the teak and holly. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to restore it to its original look? We see the teak/holly part is just a thin surface so we know we can't sand too much. O n a side note -- Stu -- if there's anything we can do to make this rough time easier for you and your wife, please ask. The service you provide us here has proven to be valuable beyond all expectations. All the best, Edd Edd M.
