A piece of advise to all of us. Someone already provided a longer list of
things one should do to protect our files form theft.

I hesitate to say this, especially, since this is too late for Stu. But I
learned this the hard way, as well, so at least I know how it feels when your
home is burglarised and your privacy violated.

One thing that many of us don't think in protecting our files is the off-site
backup. Many of us, if not most, have learned that having some backup is a good
thing, especially if the things go wrong. One step further is the off-site
backup. the process is very simple: buy a portable disk drive (nowadays you can
get multiple TBs for around $100); do a full backup of all your files (pay
extra attention to pictures and personal records (most of the time if the
electronic copies are gone, there is no way to retrieve this information)),
store the disk OUTSIDE of your home (if you still work, your office is a good
place; if you don't, put it in your bank's safety deposit box, at your
children's, at your friends'). Bring the disk in every 3-6 months (depending on
your personal level of paranoia) and repeat the procedure. If you are as
paranoid as I am, by a second HD and rotate (each is used on a 6-month period,
but the procedure is repeated every 3 months).

The problem is that we learn these things after the fact.

(a full disclosure - I do not have any interest in any HD manufacturing company
(would we notice an uptick in HD prices over the next month or so?))

good luck, Stu and Gladys, in recovering form the disaster.

Marek (in Ottawa)
