Looks like you guys timed this exchange perfectly for me to pick up. The last big item on my list is the steering with having removed the Edson system completely and now I have to re-think it. I took the binnacle apart as much as I could but the SS pipes were and still are seized with the horizontal bit but then all that part got powder coated and I need to polish the steel, and re-assemble it all. With my proposed electric drive, my clutch and throttle get reduced to one lever, but I was similarly puzzled by how those plates go together.
Then I ended up sending my rudder to Phils for 3500 using my old solid SS post with the webs cleaned of corrosion and a much cleaner and symmetrical foil that is very close to the old one. So thanks for all these tips. I studied them pretty closely when figuring out my repair plan. As I recall, there is the compass, which screws into what seems to be a "spacer", then you have the throttle/tranny lever/linkage assembly and below that there is the top of the pedestal which is kind of funnel shaped. So, the bolts go through the bottom flange of the spacer/compass housing, through the throttle/tranny linkage assemble and screw directly into the funnel shaped piece at the top of the pedestal. I don't recall struggling with holding back on any nuts when using the vicegrips to remove the bolts. That is why I believe they screw right into the top of the pedestal. The bolts are about 3 1/2" long to get them through all the parts. Here is a link to a sketch I put together from memory but, I'm pretty sure this is how it goes. http://sdrv.ms/XUoFbu ---------- Original Message ---------- From: Joel Aronson <joel.aron...@gmail.com> To: "cnc-list@cnc-list.com" <cnc-list@cnc-list.com> Subject: Re: Stus-List Edson Pedestal Date: Mon, 18 Mar 2013 10:37:17 -0400 Kim, There is a diagram here:http://www.edsonmarine.com/support/PDFs/planning/EB381SteeringGuide.pdf I don't think the screws go all the way to the pedestal. but I could be wrong. Keep dribbling some liquid wrench down screws and/or squirt PB Blaster with extender tube on screw/pedestal interface through new or any hole you find like wires for compass light. After soaking overnight try tapping on screw driver with hammer while turning or use small impact wrench. Grinding heads of screws will be difficult due to tool access. Good luck!
