Here is my story about the electric. Since we got our boat in 2001, we did mostly club racing and 4 or 5 lake crossings plus a few Lake Ontario 300 distance races. As the owner of a Diesel Jetta, and as the owner of an air survey company which operates piston and turbine powered aircraft, I wish someone would develop a diesel for them because it is the best internal combustion engine technology period. However, they don't like starting running for 15 minutes and stopping. My old Westerbeke clunked along at 2000 RPB although rated at 2500 and stank and leaked oil. All for what? So I could make my dock without raising my neighbour's eyebrows whilst sailing in? So, all I need for my kind of sailing is something to park the beast. Then there is the matter, that having spent the best part of my adult life between 2 250-350 HP engines, I like the silence of sailing. Finally, the annual spring/fall ritual with the antifreeze etc. is not the labour of love I'd like to enjoy, so electric. About 10 years ago I researched it and came upon Solomon. When my boat was laid up in 2006 for my deck and external hull reno, I encountered a fellow who told me about another Toronto sailor who has a 35-II with an electric, so I looked him up on the internet, got myself invited on his boat for an evening cruise/sail and had him demo the system. The DB is the same as a 4 year old blowing bubbles in bathtub, the engine room looks like you could do brain surgery and as long as you keep the batteries charged, no winter maintenance drill. 5-6 hours at normal cruising speed which is about 75% of hull speed and enough to motor across Lake Ontario. $5K cheaper than a brand new Yanmar installed and taxes paid. The outfit that puts the package together is based in Minnesota and are called Electric Yachts. I hold no shares. The economy needs to be examined in light of the cost after 5 years of replacing the ODYSSEY AGM bank at $2600.00 which is about $500.00 for a season of diesel and in my boat, we go through no more than $100.00, so that is not the reason... My wife likes the idea, as the noise and smell were objectionable and my daughter who at one time worked for GREENPEACE, loves it... That's it folks.
