Check out the battery powered LED push lights at WalMart and Harbor Freight. I placed one in each bunk for reading lights and use them often for ambiance. I like the hockey puck size that use 3 AA batteries, and I place them so I can light a bunk and the light is away from direct view by cockpit crew. I put one in the ice box that has an auto off after 1 minute. I believe the batteries lasted all season, some longer. These little guys can be found for $4 to $6 US.

The lamp appears to be 12 volt, comes disassembled from its base and with a very minor modification could be screwed into a shelf or bulkhead. It's about 14" long and flexible from end to end into infinite configurations. For $10 I'm going to get a couple and put them on the boat in place of some of the old high wattage units. I'll post a picture after I complete the install.
