I installed an Espar Hydronic unit on Indigo about 10 years ago. The heater
provides hot water and pumps it through a series loop of two fan-coil units and
the heating coil in my domestic hot water heater. Comments:
1. No problems whatsoever. Always starts and works well.
2. Total power consumption is about 5 Amps at 12.6V. with the fans on. Diesel
consumption is about 0.6L/hr as I recall. Doodly.
3. The fan-coiis are low power units designed specifically for the application.
4. One f-c is mounted in the aft cabin and the other in the centre of the main
cabin. I have a third unit to mount in the forward v-berth but never installed
it and no one has complained. Maybe too cold to talk...?
5. I can switch off the fans when I just want hot water for washing etc. but no
cabin heat.
6. The cabins heat up a bit more slowly than they probably would with a similar
sized hot air unit, but the simultaneous availability of hot water is a big
plus. No engine running involved.
7. My experience installing and repairing boat heaters suggests that the Espar
units are less problematic than their Webasto equivalents, air or water.
8. In case you change your mind and decide to go to heated air, the best
working installations I have done duct the hot air into the main cabin just
under the lowest companionway stair and have as short a duct as possible from
the heater. The hot air fills the cabin quickly and spreads throughout the
boat.

It's a good project. A dishwasher is also a good thing:)

I am looking to add heat to Alera. I have decided that a hydronic system is
the way to go as it will have the added advantage of hot water while at anchor.
I have pretty much settled on the
Webasto TSL17 http://www.suremarineservice.com/TSL17SW-12.aspx

Has anyone on the list had one of these units or installed a hydronic system
(especially in a 37+!).

Suggestions or general thoughts on this, of course, welcome.
