Change subject. "Generic" electronics will eventually force specialized manufactures to provide appropriate value. For example, an iPad with the ActiveCaptain app provides more than adequate and up to date charts and navigation for North America, not to mention the crowd sourced notes on shoaling, anchorages, and feedback on facilities.
Of course, there are limitations: no integration to an autopilot and no integration with wind instruments. However, given how cheap used iPad's are, combining them with a basic autopilot becomes a reasonable choice. No doubt the integration will get better in the future. And, try and watch a movie on your Garmin... I did not know this when I purchased my copy in 2012 at Canadian Tire and got a rain check for a GPS unit that was on sale. The GPS unit never came in and was discontinued. A web search has revealed that an unlock code generator for Garmin charts was published online several years ago. Seems Garmin used an algorithm that someone was able to replicate. I have not tried it, but if I do I will send you a message on how it goes. So far I have not even opened the packaging on the CD. By the way, the boat show price for a chip with east, west, and central Canada was $140, but I wanted to use what I already had before forking over any more money. Garmin used to charge about the same price for a single "region". I think that the NOAA release of all their raster charts has had an effect on these prices.
