The following is a link to a standard electrician's tool for this, called a
"fish tape" on the Harbor Freight website.  It is made form spring steel
and is flat so it bends mostly in one direction.  this feature allows you
to twist it as you push it which allows you to "steer" it a bit to get it
to where you want it to go.

It works better than a straightened coat hanger if you have to go any
distance.  As Edd said, for short distances a coat hanger rocks.
