Edd,

My wife & I both hold USCG 200 GRT Masters licenses. Original issue 1987.
Did the Sea School prior to sitting for the tests, have no idea of how it
works these days. Renewal is a PITA as we just went through that with the
USCG, also now you must hold a valid TWIC (Transportation Workers
Identification Card issued by the TSA) Card in order to keep your license and
that
adds another USD 132.50 to the $ USD 145.00 renewal fee. Both are valid for 5
years. Between our sailing C&C 39 and delivering yachts that we export from
our dock to the pier we have never actually used them to make any
money..but we do enough offshore sailing to gain enough time to keep our
current
tonnage and keep the licenses renewed. We will not renew them when they
expire in 5 years and we will then be to old to use them

We originally obtained the licenses with the idea of doing crewed charters
as well as big boat sailing lessons. After all of the hassle of becoming
licensed it became apparent to us that we really didn't want to have to take
people sailing and having kiss their asses as the same time since they
would be paying us. So beyond the initial ego trip we have never actually used
these tickets as originally intended.

Nice to have, but expensive to obtain and keep current

Listers,

Has anyone on the list gone through the process of getting a captain's
license? And, if so, why?

I keep seeing these courses available at boat shows and the back of
sailing magazines, and have always been a little curious. Then again, I've
heard
horror stories as to increased liability should someone get hurt on a
vessel operated by a licensed captain.

Any thoughts?

All the best,

Edd
