Ron,
Interesting. None of our local races allow the use of an autopilot, even single handed events. I have an Autohelm 4000 which does a pretty good job. I use it mostly while motoring. I motored for five hours in heavy fog the other day. It did a lot better job than I would. Every time I tried to steer I would slowly turn left. No landmarks to steer by and I wasn't watching the compass close enough. Thanks for your response. I would use the autopilot mostly for long distance races and the occasional short or single handed race. With an autopilot I would consider entering in some of the long races double handed instead of fully crewed. I like the idea of following a compass heading as well as a wind angle setting to avoid accidental gibes and tacks. In the long distance races, even with the fully crewed races, we are often short handed because of our shifts so having an autopilot will be like adding a crew that is on 24 hour watch that I don't have to feed. It will also be very handy when setting or changing our sails in our club races. If it sounds like I am trying to talk myself into this expense doesn't it sound like every sailor's thought process? Will you be asking the autopilot to drive while racing short handed or only on deliveries? On Calypso (24,000lb displ) we have an over sized drive motor under the deck with its own tiller attached directly to the rudder shaft. The brains are B&G. This set up will drive to compass, wind angle or waypoint. I can push two buttons and it will tack or gybe. I have used it for single handed sailing but mostly it drives when we are motoring or to hold course while I adjust the sails. The only additional feature I would like is a remote control.
