I help at our local maritime museum - picking up donated boats. This one looks like quite a few that we get. My guess is the owner is older and cannot keep up with the boat - particularly if there are few times he/she can use it. A friend picked up a Morgan 35 at our sale last year - $7000. It needed a new head, a good cleaning, and will need some new sails pretty soon. But, it was in very clean shape - no leaks - a nice diesel - furler, etc. No current electronics, but for 7K? He is enjoying the hell out of it.
This one looks pretty clean - but the market for old boats, regardless of how nice they are (Atomic 4 is a problem in marketability) is not strong at all. Another friend picked up a 26 footer - lousy interior - one cylinder Yanmar (but he couldn't run it before the purchase - as is/ where is) - for $100! Pulled the interior out, took it home, used it as patterns for a new one (he is a pretty good woodworker), reinstalled, cleaned up all the exterior teak, waxed it, painted the bottom, bought a new main, paid the yard mechanic two hours to get the engine running and has a pretty nice boat!!! He has a couple months of spare time and maybe two grand in it. If I were on the other side of the Bay and wanted another project..... This was a donated boat so I suspect it isn't in the best of shape, or the owner just needed to get out from under it.
