I have the GX2150 interfaced to a Standard Horizon CP190i on Touche'. Interface was straightforward. GPS data appears on VHF. AIS targets appear on GPS.
Friend of mine just interfaced an Icom AIS receiver with a Garmin chartplotter. It wasn't straightforward. I think he had to delete or redesignate some sentences from the Garmin receive slots in order to receive the AIS VDM sentence.
For some GPS interfacing, it's more than the wiring. You have to set the NMEA version, the Baud rate for the port (The GX2150 AIS data streams at 34800 baud), etc. For Garmins to interface, you usually have to go configure the interface to NMEA data rather than Garmin's proprietary GNMEA sentences.
When I was interfacing my Nexus instruments to my wheelpilot, I redesignated some of the 16 NMEA sentence slots to send the wheelpilot data more often.
