I haven't been following this thread, but here are my thoughts which may have 
already been offered: 

My boat came with a 7:1 purchase and cam cleat setup on the traveler car. It 
worked fine in medium to heavy air, but in light air there was too much 
friction, and I had to push the boom out by hand. The winch that was available 
was being used by the previous owner for the jib halyard. I reduced the 
purchase to 4:1, replaced the blocks with Harken carbon blocks, and used the 
self tailing winch instead of a cam cleat setup. With the shorter main sheet, 
the adjustment is faster , and the boom moves out easily in light air.
