I (the skipper) pay for race registration, diesel, broken boat bits .... I also provide water, pop and ice. The crew takes turns bringing beer and paying for burgers at the club after the race. I occasionally bring beer / buy burgers .... probably less than my equal share.
This is typical at my yacht club Best regards, Bob Hickson, P. Propane is a bit better than that. I'll have to read the other. Curious because some boats still use coal heaters. The advantage is that only CO2 given off and not water vapor, thus keeping cabin dryer. Although is should be vented, not always a perfect world. It is written about a clipper ship voyage laden with coal that got wet as it was loaded into the ship holds. The description of how dangerous wet coal is at sea is graphic. I have hauled two of Sterling 's books on almost all of my offshore voyages owing to the excellent way they fit in with the offshore sound track. The second novel is "Wanderer". I'd never heard that before and I come from an era when I used to shovel coal into the furnace and later fill the stoker hopper with coal. I don't recall precautions about wet coal, other than it burning much better when dry. Charcoal does make better tasting food, but it is a messy PITA on a boat. One surveyor, no doubt traumatize by a coal bunker fire in a previous life, would not sign off until I got rid of the charcoal grill. Coal will spontaneously ignite when damp. I do much as Gary does, plenty of drinks and a few snacks..........our whole Wednesday nite fleet gets together afterward at a local pub and my crew share the cost of beer and food there..... One of the A fleet skippers used to have an email roster of over 15 guys and his secretary used to start a week in advance to line up crew. If you're going to race seriously, you need crew for every Wednesday from mid May through mid September, and then on most every weekend for one or both days. It is definitely hard to find crew.
