One side went to the starter solenoid and the other to the alternator. Then 
each side went to the ammeter... What is its function?

 Almost looks like a high amp fuse, but I think it is just a block.  Might want 
to move the bilge pump hose off that wire!  BTW, nice stuffing box, but I don't 
know the answer to the grease question. Joel
